PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Spring is in the air and it is time to start thinking about transitions of MCA Leadership. If your region, division, or interest group has not submitted a list of your officers for 2009-2010 to Dianne Speed (diannespeed@mscounselor.org), would you please send them to her by March 10th. We are preparing for the last MCA Executive Board meeting for 2008-2009 scheduled for April 3 and want to be sure that we invite all of the incoming Presidents to attend.

The MCA call for nominations for the 2009-2010 year is out! We will be electing a President-Elect-Elect and a Secretary-Elect at the 2009 MCA Conference in November. Additional information about the job duties for each position is available at the MCA web site along with a nomination form. Please think about MCA members you know who are great leaders and nominate them for one of these important offices.

This spring we will also be working on our MCA service project which is Crisis Pregnancy Centers. The latest available research data from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics shows that teen pregnancies in the U.S. are rising. Mississippi ranks highest among the states with a teenage birth rate of 68.4 per 1,000. Every community in our state has been affected by teenage pregnancy. Many of us have worked with clients who are pregnant teens and with adults who continue to deal with decisions they made in their teenage years about an unwanted pregnancy. There are Crisis Pregnancy Centers throughout the state so you can become involved with a center in your area that provides services to the community where you live. Most services provided through the centers are free. You may donate time as a counselor to work with young women who use the centers or you can donate items such as money, baby clothes, and furniture. There is an opportunity to get involved to the level and degree you are comfortable with doing. Following this e-mail is an alphabetical list of Crisis Pregnancy Centers across the state of Mississippi. I hope you will join me in working to provide a better foundation and better choices for teens who are pregnant so that their children may have the opportunity to grow and develop into happy, productive adults!
